More great news from the 2023 World Whiskies Awards, with 78 Degrees Distillery‘s limited release Triple Smoke Whiskey receiving a gold medal and a category win for Best Australian Grain Whiskey.

The 78 Degrees ethos is to “create a stir”. Their innovative use of ingredients and distilling processes has resulted in products that really stand out in the spirits market, and Triple Smoke Whiskey is no exception. Triple Smoke Whiskey is a smooth and velvety beverage with hints of dark chocolate, dried fruit, and a subtle spiciness. It finishes with a persistent and lingering smokiness that’s both unique and enjoyable.

In creating this whiskey, the goal was to celebrate three notable whiskey-producing regions: Australia, the USA, and Scotland. To do this, they infused a different smoked element from each region into the mash, resulting in a complex and distinctive flavour profile that sets it apart from other grain whiskeys.

This process began with using locally sourced, single-paddock unmalted barley which was smoked with Australian redgum to bring out eucalypt and hazelnut praline flavours. 78 Degrees then partnered with Corsair Distillery in Nashville, USA, who smoked that same barley with American cherrywood. Back at the 78 Degrees distillery at Lot 100 in the Adelaide Hills, the mash was then blended with Scottish peated malt.

This triple smoking process resulted in a brilliantly unique flavour profile that was very well received, with the initial limited release selling out. To celebrate this recent accolade, 78 Degrees have managed to source and re-release a strictly limited number of bottles that can be purchased online here.

The World Whiskies Awards is a highly regarded competition, with esteemed international judges and no shortage of quality entries from well established distilleries. To take home a category win for Best Australian Grain Whiskey is a fantastic achievement for 78 Degrees, and a testament to their skill in creating innovative products that stand out in the market. It’s been a great year for Mighty Craft brands at the 2023 World Whiskies Awards, with Hidden Lake’s Cask No. 195 also being awarded gold back in February.
